What is LEAP?
Lewis Equine Assisted Programs - LEAP

"Equine exposure for physical, mental and emotional growth"

LEAP is an innovative equine assisted services program designed as a life skills enrichment center to help individuals with special needs, PTSD, and youth at risk.

LEAP horseback programs work with riders to strengthen their bodies and minds by developing physical, mental and emotional capabilities through interactions with PATH INTL Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors, coaches, and specially trained horses.  Lessons are tailored to each participant's ability, including grooming and tacking the horse, riding exercises and mounted games.

These activities create an enhanced sense of personal worth and self-confidence, awareness of self in relation to others, all while encouraging independence and responsibility.

LEAP's Mission

LEAP is committed to serving individuals with special needs, those with PTSD, youth at risk, and senior citizens, providing life skills development through equine assisted services.

Benefits of Theraputic Riding

Therapeutic horseback riding, also known as equine-assisted therapy, can be a beneficial activity for individuals with physical and mental disabilities. Here are some potential benefits:

Physical therapy: Horseback riding can help improve balance, coordination, and muscle strength, as well as provide a low-impact form of exercise.

Mental health benefits: Riding horses can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and can improve self-esteem and confidence.

Socialization and communication: Equine-assisted therapy can provide an opportunity for individuals with disabilities to socialize with others and practice communication skills.

Sensory stimulation: Riding horses can provide sensory stimulation through touch, movement, and the sights and sounds of being outdoors.

Fun and enjoyment: Horseback riding can be a fun and enjoyable activity for individuals with disabilities, providing a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

It is important to note that equine-assisted therapy should be provided by trained professionals who understand the specific needs and abilities of each individual. If you are interested in therapeutic horseback riding for yourself or a loved one with a physical or mental disability, it is recommended to speak with a healthcare professional and a qualified equine therapy provider to determine if it is a suitable activity.
